The Stone of Wisdom, Truth, and Authentic Expression
What is Lapis Lazuli?
Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock, combining several minerals such as lazurite (the deep blue), sodalite, calcite, and pyrite (the golden flecks). The name comes from the Latin lapis "stone," and from the Persian lazhuward "blue."
The main historical source of Lapis Lazuli with an exceptionally rich color comes from quarries in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan, which have been continuously active for 6,000 years. Other mining sources are also found in Chile, Russia, and several other countries.
Lapis Lazuli in History: From Pharaoh to Michelangelo
According to Crystal Vaults, Lapis Lazuli is one of the most sought-after gemstones throughout human history. Its deep blue color symbolized royalty, honor, divinity, and power.
Pharaohs in ancient Egypt wore "the stone of the gods" – Lapis Lazuli, and the blue sarcophagus of Tutankhamun was adorned with it.
During the Renaissance, Michelangelo and Raphael ground it into a powder to create the rare ultramarine pigment used for painting.
In Feng Shui, it is defined as a water energy stone, associated with the career path (pyrite) and the flow of life.
Energetic Properties of Lapis Lazuli
Inner Wisdom and Intuition
It is defined as the "guardian of wisdom" stone, strengthening self-awareness, inner confidence, and the ability to trust personal judgment. It develops the third eye chakra and helps access knowledge that already exists within, rather than seeking it externally.
Truth and Authentic Expression
Crystal Vaults defines it as the "stone of truth in all its aspects," from revealing inner truth to honest external expression. It is associated with the throat chakra and helps people speak their truth, after years of silence or compromise.
Protection and Mental Cleansing
It is said that Lapis Lazuli protects the energy field and helps release trapped emotions and negative thoughts. In Buddhism, it is considered a stone that frees the mind from heavy energies and enables clarity.

Lapis Lazuli and the Chakras
Lapis Lazuli is associated with two chakras: the Third Eye (Ajna) - intuition, perception, inner wisdom. Throat (Vishuddha) - authentic expression, honest communication, releasing what has been held back.
This is a unique combination because most stones are associated with a single chakra. Lapis connects thought to verbal expression, linking what is known with what is said.
What Lapis Lazuli enhances in jewelry
Daily contact with Lapis Lazuli reminds us of the intention we seek – to speak our truth, trust our inner knowledge, and remain connected to ourselves even when the environment is noisy.
Suitable for people who are in the process of finding their personal voice, for those struggling with boundary setting (can be strengthened with black obsidian) and direct communication, and for those seeking depth and clarity in important decisions (can be combined with sodalite and labradorite).
